چکیده

When a spinning-down neutron star undergoes a phase transition that produces quark matter in its core, a Super-Giant Glitch of the order ∆Ω/Ω ∼ 0.3 occurs on time scales from 0.05 seconds to a few minutes. The energy released is about 10 ergs and can account for Gamma Ray Bursts at cosmological distances. The estimated burst frequency, 10 per year per galaxy, is in very good agreement with observations. We also discuss the possibility of distinguishing these events from neutron star mergers by observing the different temporal behavior of gravitational waves. Subject headings: dense matter—elementary particles— gamma rays:bursts—stars:neutron

Cosmic Rays and High-Energy Neutrinos from Gamma-Ray Bursts

Several lines of evidence point to a relationship between gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the high mass stars that explode as supernovae. Arguments that GRB sources accelerate cosmic rays (CRs) are summarized. High-energy neutrino detection from individual GRBs would mean that they are hadronically dominated, that is, that the amount of energy deposited in the form of nonthermal hadrons in GRB blas...

Color Superconductivity in Quark Stars: Powering Gamma Ray Bursts

A two flavors color superconductive phase has been suggested as a plausible state of quark matter at high density. An intrinsic property of such a state is the generation of light particles which immediately decay into photons. Here, we explore the possibility for such a state to set in at the surface of a quark star where temperatures below Tc (the critical temperature above which color superc...

Gamma-Ray Bursts from quark stars

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to be related to the explosion of powerful supernovae type Ic, which have been stripped of their hydrogen and helium envelopes, and are rapidly rotating. There appear to be two types of these explosions: those which are approximately spherical (GRB980425/1998bw), and which are associated with weak bursts, and the classical GRBs which generate ultra-rela...

Quark Stars as inner engines for Gamma Ray Bursts?

A model for Gamma ray bursts inner engine based on quark stars (speculated to exist in nature) is presented. We describe how and why these objects might constitute new candidates for GRB inner engines. At the heart of the model is the onset of exotic phases of quark matter at the surface of such stars, in particular the 2-flavor color superconductivity. A novel feature of such a phase is the ge...

X - Ray Flares of Gamma - Ray Bursts : Quakes of Solid

We propose a star-quake model to understand X-ray flares of both long and short Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in a solid quark star regime. Two kinds of central engines for GRBs are available if pulsar-like stars are actually (solid) quark stars, i.e., the SNE-type GRBs and the SGR-type GRBs. It is found that a quark star could be solidified about 10 to 10 s later after its birth if the critical temp...
